| Abstract: |
The Gustav E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES) is a Comprehensive National Resource Center whose primary mission is to advance the training of specialists at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels while promoting innovative, collaborative and multidisciplinary studies of critical issues related to the Middle East and the Islamic world. Its distinguished faculty, strong institutional support, commitment to effective language training, rich library resources, rigorous programs of instruction, research and outreach, and increasing linkages with universities in the Middle East and the Islamic world enable the Center to carry out this mission.
CNES programs coordinate the instructional, research, and outreach activities of 75 faculty members distributed throughout the Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and professional schools. CNES maintains a close liaison between the area studies and Middle East language and literature faculties, supporting intensive summer classes, library acquisitions, and the allocation of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to students in the various departments. CNES plays an active role in American Research Centers abroad, facilitating access for language study, area research and cooperation with indigenous scholars.
CNES sponsors interdisciplinary degree programs in Middle Eastern and North African Studies (B.A.) and Islamic Studies (M.A. and Ph.D.). Middle East specializations and concentrations are available to graduates and undergrads in over 50 programs.
