| Abstract: | ||||||||||||
| The goal of the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) is to promote the study of North Africa in American institutions and to facilitate professional contacts between United States and North African scholars. AIMS is the first American Overseas Research center (AORC) to cover an entire region and the only one which administers two overseas research facilities: the Centre d'Etudes Maghrebines a Tunis (CEMAT) and the Tangier American Legation Museum (TALM). AIMS is concluding negotiations with the Government of Algeria for the establishment of a third research center in Oran. Every year, AIMS carries out an array of activities explicitly designed to encourage study in North Africa, involve increasing numbers of U.S. graduate students and scholars in North African studies, and convey U.S. values of free exchange of ideas in North Africa. AIMS conducts an annual membership drive. AIMS facilitates dialogue between members with semi-annual newsletters, subscriptions to the Journal of North African Studies, a website, a listserv, as well as annual conferences in North Africa, and dissertation workshops for graduate students. In Tunis, in Tangier, and in Oran, scholars from the United States find a home base at our research institutions to which they can turn for aid with authorizations, local contacts, and general help, and they can use libraries, attend lectures, and pursue scholarly contacts. Through its four annual grants programs, AIMS integrates North African scholars into CEMAT and TALM (Maghrebi Grants), supports US researchers throughout North Africa (CEMAT, AIMS, and GRADUATE RESEACH grants), and promotes Arabic Language acquisition and cultural exchange through the Tangier Summer Arabic Program. | ||||||||||||
