| Abstract: |
The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) was established by the United Negro College Fund in 1994 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and later transferred to the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation. The Institute administers training, institutional resource development, outreach, and research programs aimed at involving a more representative cross-section of the American citizenry in international affairs.
Through a comprehensive program of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, graduate study mentoring and career development, the IIPP Fellowship Program provides underrepresented minority students with the education and training needed to successfully enter, advance, and lead in international affairs careers.
The fellowship program is complemented by the IIPP Institutional Resource Development Grant Program, which supports the creation, expansion and improvement of international education programs at minority-serving colleges and universities; and IIPP has recently added research and evaluation capabilities that serve the projects mission, goals and objectives.
IIPP is working to extend the training pipeline downward to include K-12 students through a nationwide network of partners and upward to benefit young professionals, through the International Career Advancement Program, which IIPP co-sponsors with the Aspen Institute, the University of Denver and several independent foundations. The The Institute is emerging as a valuable clearinghouse of information on issues of cultural competence and diversity as national security and global competitiveness imperatives.
